My Story

Why I'm running- Poppy's Story

In April of this year, our little Poppy was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Rett Syndrome and it felt like our world shattered into a million pieces. Affecting less than 1 in 10,000 girls worldwide Rett Syndrome is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects every aspect of Poppy's life: from gross and fine motor skills to her ability to communicate. It is a devastating diagnosis. Our litle warrior has had to fight so hard already and her fight is only beginning.

Rett UK have been our lifeline throughout the past four months. They got in touch right away to let us know that we aren't alone- which may sound like a small thing, but when you're rushed out of a specialist's office moments after being given a devastating diagnosis it is a saving grace.

Since then Rett UK have shared information, advice and support, facilitated training and resources, and connected us with other families who understand what we are going through. Their work is invaluable and I cannot express in words what their support has done for our family and other families like ours.

So why run?

I am not a 'real' runner.  I've never managed to stick to it for any length of time. But running isn't just about fitness anymore. It has become my means of dealing with the stress, anxiety and grief of Poppy's diagnosis- a way to work through the pain and put myself in a better place mentally. A place where I feel strong and capable enough to be there for Poppy. She needs me to stay strong- and I can't let her down.

I've committed to running 10k this October: for Poppy, for children like Poppy and for families like ours. And as such, I've chosen to raise funds for Rett UK so that they can continue to offer their lifeline to families in need. I hope you'll consider donating- any amount, no matter how small, makes a big difference.
